The 2005 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia is sweet, silky and intensely perfumed in its delicate red fruit. The 2005 is an understated Piaggia, but the wine’s balance is exceptional and its freshness should allow it to develop beautifully in bottle. The fruit is remarkably pure and gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.
Late harvests, low yields, lengthy macerations and no fining/filtration are the rule at Piaggia. These new releases from proprietor Mauro Vannucci show exceptional balance, and his 2006s are the best wines I have ever tasted from the estate.
