The single-vineyard 2006 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia is a rock star wine. Super-ripe dark cherries, flowers, minerals, licorice and subtle earthiness sit on a powerful, imposing frame. This could not be more different than the two 2007s I tasted alongside it. Dense and structured to the core, the 2006 Piaggia is a wine that will require considerable cellaring, but it is a gem. The inner perfume, purity of fruit and finish are all phenomenal. The Riserva is 70% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vinified separately using only indigenous yeasts. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and subsequent aging in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.
Proprietor Mauro Vannuci follows up last year’s exceptional wines with another fine set of new releases. Late harvests, long macerations using only indigenous yeasts and no filtration prior to bottling are some of the hallmarks of this small estate.
