The 2009 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia is richer and deeper than the 2008 in its fruit, yet retains the medium-bodied structure that is typical of the vintage. Tobacco, flowers and cherries wrap around the soft, mid-palate and finish. The 2009 is a bit more overt in its fruit than the 2008, which is made in a more perfumed, energetic style. It will be interesting to follow both vintages over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.
Piaggia is another winery that has been on a tear of late. Softer, gentler extractions and longer aging in oak are some of the evolutions in the approach at Piaggia over the last few years. I can’t think of too many wines from Carmignano I would rather drink than these fabulous wines from the Vannucci family.
