Served blind at a private tasting, the 1970 Calon Segur attested to lacklustre showings of previous bottles. There is a rather ersatz ripeness on the nose, molasses and fig, damp earthy scents that suggest that maybe there was a lot of chaptalization being undertaken in the winery. The palate is balanced, but there is little depth here and it lacks vigor. With its dusty finish, it is an old school Claret that has seen better days...probably around the mid- to late-1970s. Approach with low expectations or head straight to the far superior wines from 1995 onward. Tasted August 2015.
