The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino immediately reminds you of the austerity and brawn inherent to this important category of wine. Brunello is released five years after the harvest precisely to allow complexity to develop in the bottle. That careful evolution has transpired nicely here. The wine shows dark plum and dried blackberry in a leading role, with spice, tar, tobacco and campfire ash at the back. The tannins are present but on the soft side, and the wine weighs in with medium-rich fruit weight. Some 51,000 bottles were made.

This red is broad and powerful, with beefy tannins laying a foundation for cherry, berry, eucalyptus and iron flavors. The savory, earth and mineral side emerges more dominant as this plays out on the burly finish. The Fanti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows a slightly robust consistency and a heavier center of gravity compared to recent past releases. The wine is sensual and rich with impactful favors of red and purple fruit, forest floor, campfire ash and ferrous earth. The mouthfeel is powerful, but the wine still imparts a delicate, smooth-sailing personality with good tannic management. Production is 48,000 bottles.
