The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is made in a more extroverted style, with a touch more new oak. It is a serious, beautifully sculpted wine bursting with dark plums, black cherries, mint, sage and rosemary. Despite its richness, the Poggiale retains plenty of minerality, with the essence of crushed rocks dominating the powerful finish. This is another fabulous effort from Castellare. Il Poggiale is 90% Sangioveto, 5% Colorino and 5% Canaiolo aged in French oak, with only 10% new barrels in the mix. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027.
This is a superb set of new releases from propritor Paolo Panerai and long-time oenologist Alessandro Cellai.
