The 2000 San Martino utilizes, as always, the house’s best Sangiovese, and its potent, intense, and jammy nose, the powerful flavors laced with tobacco, herbs, caramel, and chocolate, are a fine statement of the grape in a challenging vintage. Drink: 2006-2014.
The Farkas family’s Villa Cafaggio estate was the first to put Panzano, previously considered nothing more than an unimportant hamlet, on the map. The subsequent arrival of Castello dei Rampolla, Fontodi, and many others have consolidated the reputation of this part of Chianti Classico, but the memory of the 1971 Chianti Classico Riserva of this house lingers in the mind of those who had the good fortune to taste it. The wines have further improved in recent years thanks to the efforts of Stefano Farkas and Stefano Chioccioli, and this is a strong lineup.
