Coming from 50-year-old vines planted all on hillside slopes, the 2012 Condrieu Clos Chanson (aged all in barrel) is profound stuff. Medium to full-bodied, incredibly fresh and with a building, rich and layered textured, this awesome wine gives up aromas of white peach, crushed rock, flowers and hints of apricot. Seamless, elegant and gorgeously put together, it should age beautifully for 4-5 years (and I think it will be even better in another 6 months).
I had a fabulous visit with proprietor Andre Perret at his cellar located just north of Chavanay. Soft spoken, charming and generous, he runs an immaculate cellar and releases up to three Condrieus in a vintage. In addition to his whites, he fashions elegant, almost Burgundian-styled reds from Saint Joseph that warrant more attention.
