The 1996 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay is a breakthrough for a Chardonnay at this price level that has been fermented in wood and aged in cask. The wine is surprisingly rich, yet retains its freshness without the heavy overlay of oak that is typical of many Spanish whites. The wine reveals a moderately rich, orange marmalade, honey-scented nose with fresh apple fruit in the background. Medium-bodied, with surprising concentration, as well as nicely-integrated smoke and spice, this is a lively, medium-weight, 100% Chardonnay that should drink well for 6-12 months. It is an excellent value.
