Jean-Francois Coche-Dury's 1989 Meursault-Perrieres smells and tastes as if it were a Montrachet. If there is one premier cru vineyard in Burgundy that merits elevation to grand cru status, it must be Les Perrieres in Meursault. The huge nose of minerals, lemons, apple blossoms, and buttered toast is followed by a wine with immense richness, massive structure, and layer upon layer of Chardonnay fruit. This wine is crammed with enough glycerin, extract, alcohol, and intensity to evolve for at least 10 or more years. However, it is impossible to resist at the moment given its extreme richness. This is a winemaking tour de force!
Jean-Francois Coche-Dury is one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth. He continues to produce dazzling wines from unbelievably tiny yields, taking the maximum risk by bottling his wines with no filtration. His spectacular 1989s are worth a special effort to obtain.
