The 1999 Dry Red No. 2 (primarily Shiraz with a dollop of Viognier) is an elegant, finesse-style effort that is easy to underestimate given its delicate, restrained personality. It develops beautifully in the glass, revealing sweet notes of red cherries, acacia flowers, and currants. Although impeccably made, this medium-bodied red is somewhat underwhelming in the mouth as well as finish. It should drink well for a decade. It is interesting to note how much lighter and more developed aromatically the 1999 Yarra Yering offerings are than the 1998s. One has to admire this winery's purity of expression, and terroirists will use meaningless words such as "transparency" to describe these wines. Terroir or not, they merit considerable interest.Importer: Rob McDonald, Old Bridge Cellars, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 258-9552
