The 2008 Chianti Classico Rubiolo comes across as fresh and vinous in its bouquet, until the full force of its rich, exuberant fruit hits the palate. This shows wonderful richness and intensity in its succulent red cherries, mint, rosemary and roses. The beautiful, fruit-driven Rubiolo is best enjoyed while the fruit is vibrant. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.
Gagliole is one of the most stunningly beautiful properties in Tuscany, a region not exactly lacking in picture-perfect scenery. The terraced, old-vine plots are truly a sight to behold. The winery itself is fairly stripped down, with the exception of recently purchased sorting tables that are much rarer in Tuscany than readers might think. Most producers would probably be thrilled with wines like these. Still, it seems fairly obvious that the potential of what is possible here has only been scratched. Maybe I am being too hard on Gagliole, but the bar must be set higher for those to whom nature has given so much. The bottom line is, are these the very best wines that can be made here? In my mind the answer is no.
