With fruit from La Morra, the Cascina Adelaide 2016 Barolo Fossati offers a distinctive bouquet with a good many surprises along the way. This wine has a beautifully floral bouquet with rose, lilac and violet. There are some sweet fruit tones of apricot and orange that go beyond the standard forest berry and cherry normally delivered by Nebbiolo. When you dig extra deep, you get unusual tones of thyme, green olive or dried rose potpourri that are not exactly typical of Nebbiolo, but they are quite pretty and interesting nonetheless. The tannins show good integration in this bottling, and I'm giving this wine a few extra points for offbeat originality. The jury is out on how those aromas will evolve, because they are unusual. Some 15,000 bottles were made.
