A beautifully traditional effort, with copious saddle leather, ground pepper, wild herbs, sandalwood and kirsch, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape (70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and the balance other permitted varieties) is medium-bodied, nicely focused and shows a touch of the dry tannin of the vintage. It’s a solid, character-filled effort to drink over the coming 4-5 years or so. Drink now-2019.
One of my favorite estates, these classic, traditional efforts are made by Jean-Paul Versino.
