I have encountered problems with past editions of this wine, but the 2013 Barolo Gattera puts on a more satisfying display. However, the bouquet is unusually downplayed and withholding. With effort and imagination, you do get layers of dried blackberry, spice and campfire ash. This is a timid cousin to the other wines in the Fratelli Revello portfolio.

An underlying licorice element plays throughout this red, while the cherry, leather, earth and wild herb notes float on top. Firm yet balanced, with a long, tobacco- and iron-tinged finish.
