The 2003 Barolo Gattera is an approachable, full-bodied wine with a soft core of plums, prunes, leather, coffee beans and chocolate. It comes across as somewhat more advanced than the other Barolos in this lineup, consistent with how wines from this particular vineyard fared in 2003. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2013.
Even though La Morra was the most penalized commune in 2003, this is a strong set of releases from brothers Enzo and Carlo Revello, whose small estate is located in the Annunziata sub-zone. Revello is among the growers who have started to move away from an exclusive use of small French oak barrels, and has added medium-size casks in recent years.
