I have tasted some fabulous older vintages from Guillemot over the years, but the 1964 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Serpentières was good rather than great, offering up a sweet bouquet of dried cherries, orange rind, mushroom and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and melting, with juicy acids and a sun-kissed core of fruit. It's pretty and elegant, but it seems as if it may have been chaptalized to a surprising degree for a ripe vintage such as this.
