The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Pergole Vece is hugely impressive considering the challenging nature of the vintage. This beautifully delineated Amarone emerges from the glass with lovely inner perfume, layers of fruit and a vein of supporting minerality that keeps all of the elements in balance and proportion. Mocha, espresso and sweet wild cherries develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. The richness tapers off just a bit on the long, refined finish, but that is a relatively small critique for such an outstanding wine. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020. Big and juicy on the nose, with loads of ripe fruit, yet in a subtle way. Full-bodied, with round, soft tannins that turn silky and very pretty.
