The 2010 Alte d’Altesi is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Dark cherries, plums, licorice, grilled herbs and a hint of French oak inform a juicy, flavorful red that should drink nicely for another few years. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2018. This is a mixed set of releases from Altesino, one of Montalcino’s historic properties. The 2008 Brunellos and the 2007 Riserva in particular show signs of greenness and oxidation that recall the problems that plagued the 2001s a few years back. The 2008 Alte d’Altesi (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon) flows from the glass with wild cherries, plums, grilled herbs, cassis and licorice. It shows more firmness in its tannins and more depth in its fruit than the Palazzo Altesi, but doesn’t quite have that wine’s sheer drinkability. The 2007 Alte di Altesi is Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in roughly equal parts. Sweet scents of tobacco, spices, licorice and French oak flow from the glass effortlessly. The effects of the warm vintage come through in the forward, advanced quality of the fruit, which suggests that ideally the Alte di Altesi is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
