This wine was actually already reviewed a few years back. The 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino Colleallodole is a dark and rich red with quite a bit of concentrated fruit weight and a powerful 15.5% alcohol content. The fruit is opulent and rich, with sweet layers of dried cherry and black plum. Ultimately, the spice component leaves the biggest impact, with toasted cumin and clove. The wine does approach balance, however, and that is not always an easy feat for the highly tannic Sagrantino grape.

Made in limited production numbers (with just 1,300 bottles released), the 2014 Montefalco Sagrantino Colleallodole is a powerful wine with broad shoulders and a deep footprint. This thickly extracted expression of Umbria's workhorse Sagrantino grape shows dark fruit flavors with dried cherry and blackberry marmalade on the front line. The wine is more astringent and rough in terms of mouthfeel, and I'm not sure it will ever fully iron out.

The 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino Colleallodole is an exceptional wine with deep color saturation and enormous clarity. That level of sharpness is very difficult to obtain given the massive tannins and concentration that is achieved with the mighty Sagrantino grape. The bouquet here is forceful and tight with black fruit and generous spice. There is a touch of buoyancy as well (with aromas of dried cherry skin) that give the wine a sense of vertical lift. The tannins are abrasive, so be ready.

The 2009 Montefalco Sagrantino Colleallodole is aged in large oak casks and opens with dark garnet color and slight opacity. The aromatic intensity is finer and more focused with bright highlights of spice and dried fruit that emerge immediately from the glass. The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino Colleallodole is simply beautiful. It has a little more depth, richness and creaminess than the estate’s straight Sagrantino. Layers of soft, textured fruit caress the palate in this inviting Sagrantino. The round, expressive fruit captures the essence of Bevagna in its attractive contours and supple personality. The 2008 isn’t a huge Collellodole, instead it is a wine that impresses for its fabulous balance. There are a handful of more famous Sagrantinos, but the Colleallodole is the wine for readers who are looking for the best in artisan craftsmanship. I imagine the 2008 will drink well early and expect it will also mature sooner than other recent vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. Working out of a small, cramped winery that could easily be mistaken for a cellar in Burgundy or Piemonte, Francesco Antano crafts wines imbued with personality. At their best, these are some of the very finest wines to emerge from Montefalco.
