Marcoux's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape—approximately 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre, 7% Syrah and 3% Cinsault, mostly aged in concrete—offers up a complex array of dried spices and garrigue, ripe cherries and red berries. It's full-bodied, rich and tannic but ripe, with plenty of fruit to back it up, and refreshing hints of licorice on the long finish. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

While there was no Vieilles Vignes bottling produced this vintage, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape stands out for its remarkable perfume of garrigue and spice, which epitomizes the complexity attainable solely from grapes in this remarkable appellation. Tendrils of dried herbs entwine raspberries and black cherries, accented by hints of Asian five-spice powder. It's medium to full-bodied and delicately dusty in feel, generous yet softly structured, with a lingering, elegant finish. Drink this beauty over the next decade or so.

Dark, rich and intense, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape nicely reflects the heat and dryness of the growing season. It's full-bodied and lush, with chocolaty overtones to the black cherry and licorice flavors. I'd give it until 2020, then drink it over the next 7-8 years.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah, aged predominantly in concrete and foudre. Biodynamically farmed and traditionally made, it reached 15.5% alcohol, which shows a bit in the wine's size and slight warmth. It's full-bodied, rich and velvety, with bold black cherry fruit, hints of clove and cola and a long, savory-spicy finish. I'd opt for drinking it over the next 6-7 years.
