The 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape displays an advanced, dark ruby color with some garnet hues at the edge. The controversial, spicy aroma of allspice, vitamin tablets, and overripe red and black fruits is sure to find a mixed reception, even from Rhone wine enthusiasts. With rich, sweet, jammy fruit and low acidity, this mouthfilling, fleshy, distinctively-styled Chateauneuf du Pape should be drunk over the next 7-8 years. I did not retaste the 1994 offerings during my visit in June, 1996, so the above score and tasting note is the same as reported in issue #101.
This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.
