Possessing additional richness, the 2011 Saint Joseph l’Olivaie (100% Syrah, from 60-year-old vines, aged 15 months in 20% new French oak) is a gorgeous effort that gives up ample violets, black raspberry, licorice, smoked earth and hints of bacon fat. This medium to full-bodied, rich and beautifully textured 2011 has solid focus and grip through the finish. I love the overall purity here, and this is worth seeking out. Drink it over the coming decade.
Another rising star in the appellation that needs to be on every reader’s short list, Domaine Coursodon is run by the young, talented Jerome Coursodon. A fifth generation winemaker, Jerome traveled extensively before starting at the Domaine in 1999. The estate covers 38 acres, all in St. Joseph (most near the village of Mauves and Tournon). They make up to four separate St.-Joseph reds, and two whites, with the reds seeing close to 100% destemming and aging in a combination of demi-muids and burgundy barrels.
