The 2008 Etna Rosso Cavanera Rovo delle Coturnie (Nerello Mascalese-Nerello Cappuccio) is a more delicate and texturally refined wine than the straight Etna Rosso. Sweet candied cherries, flowers, tobacco and spices are some of the nuances that come to life in this feminine, ethereal red. Despite its mid-weight personality this shows excellent density and enough richness to reward several years of cellaring. The Rovo delle Coturnie could easily be mistaken for a fine Barbaresco. Another year or two in bottle should help the tannins integrate. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.
This is another strong set of wines from Firriato. The estate first came to attention for their bold, internationally styled wines, but over the last two years I have found the wines from the Etna the most interesting.
