From a vintage where Grenache excelled, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is more Grenache-dominated than normal and is 70% Grenache with the balance 10% each of Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvedre. A small portion was also aged in barrels, and this was the first vintage where they started destemming. Fully mature, with lots of spice, mature fruit, medium-bodied richness and a supple, sexy texture, there's no upside here, but it's a thoroughly enjoyable Chateauneuf du Pape to drink sooner rather than later.
