As was the case in 2017, the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean has turned out especially well this year. Bursting with aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, orange oil and beeswax and framed by a deft touch of reduction, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, its fleshy core of fruit girdled by tangy acids.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean is showing very well, opening in the glass with scents of crisp yellow orchard fruit, white flowers, marzipan and fresh peach. Medium-bodied, bright and tensile, its satiny attack segues into a deep, lively core, concluding with a chalky finish.

A fine follow-up to the terrific 2017—which continues to show brilliantly from my cellar—Niellon's 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean offers up aromas of white currants, citrus oil and pear mingled with notions of toasted bread and nutmeg. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with racy acids, fine depth and concentration. This is well worth seeking out.

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean continues to drink well from my cellar, exhibiting aromas of pear, confit citrus, toasted nuts, praline and smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's underpinned by racy acids. Somewhere in between youth and maturity, I'd be inclined to wait a few years before broaching more bottles, though readers with colder cellars may still catch the wine in its impressive infancy.

The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean offers up a reserved nose of lemon and lime zest, pastry cream, toasted nuts and bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied intense and concentrated, with a glossy attack, broader shoulders than the Clos de la Maltroie and excellent depth and purity. It should develop positively with bottle age over the coming decade.
