I may have slightly overrated the 1996 Chianti Classico Le Masse di Greve. Its austere, dry, leathery personality, and tannic finish are cause for concern. Nevertheless, there is attractive sweet strawberry/cherry fruit behind the wine's framework. If that component emerges, and the tannin and structure recede, this wine will be at least a mid-eighty point effort. If not, my score may look exceptionally generous. This wine's painful level of tannin will be appreciated primarily by masochists. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
