The outstanding 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes (36% Grenache, 32% Mourvedre, and 32% Syrah; 11,000 bottles produced) is unquestionably one of the stars of this vintage. The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The nose offers up copious quantities of cassis, kirsch, new saddle leather, Asian spices, and earth. Rich and full-bodied, with a creamy texture, low acidity, and a luscious, massive finish for the vintage, this is a superb example from a light year. It should drink well for 10-15 years.
