From 1978 on, no white wine grapes were utilized in the blend of the Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva. Before 1978, approximately 20% white wine grapes were included in each vintage. The 1977 exhibits a seaweed, vegetal, iodine, salty-like aroma that vaguely recalls a handful of southern Rhones. The wine retains some of its sweet fruit, but the color possesses considerable amber and rust. It appears to be drying out, revealing coarse tannin in the medium-bodied finish. Still interesting and intact, this wine requires drinking. Cellaring it for another 3-4 years is not advised.A Leonardo LoCasio Selection, imported by Winebow Imports, Hohokus, NJ; (800) 445-0620.
