The estate’s 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva (90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo) presents a medium translucent color along with sweet notes of toasted oak on the nose. With some air, notes of black cherries, tobacco, earthiness, vanilla, spices and leather develop in the glass. Though it remains a fairly structured Chianti Classico, the tannins are fine, and at six years of age it is an elegant, highly enjoyable wine to drink now and over the next ten or so years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.
Badia a Coltibuono has been owned by the Stucchi Prinetti family since the mid-19th century. The original estate and its namesake abbey are located in one of the most picturesque corners of Gaiole, in the heart of Chianti Classico. More recently the family has built a state of the art winemaking facility in Monti. The estate produces a wide range of Sangiovese-based wines, all from organically grown fruit. There is also a negociant range marketed under the brand name Coltibuono.
