The 2003 Recioto La Roggia reveals a rich, full-bodied expression of dark fruit, tobacco, chocolate and spices even if this is a fairly restrained, linear style of Recioto. Still, it offers superb freshness, definition and length. As always, I prefer to give the Speri Reciotos plenty of air prior to drinking. La Roggia is blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% other varieties. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.
Speri is a small, family-owned estate with vineyards in the historical part of the Valpolicella zone. Stylistically the Amarones are made in a somewhat austere style. I find that the wines typically benefit from a few hours of air, especially the Recioto.
