Speri's 2004 Recioto La Roggia reveals a glossy, dark color along with jammy fruit, chocolate, cocoa and violets on a full-bodied, unctuous frame. This deeply structured Recioto will require at least a year or two of bottle age to allow the textural elements to soften. The Speri Reciotos also show best when given several hours of air. La Roggia is blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% other varieties. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
Speri is a small, family-owned estate with vineyards in the historical part of the Valpolicella zone. Stylistically the Amarones are made in a somewhat austere style. I find that the wines typically benefit from a few hours of air, especially the Recioto.
