The 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Etienne Gonnet exhibits copious amounts of smoky underbrush, garrigue, olive, peppery aromas, along with attractive roasted meat characteristics. Full-bodied, with layers of jammy fruit, high glycerin, and a blockbuster finish, this is a rich, youthful, broad-shouldered Chateauneuf du Pape for drinking between the late nineties and 2012.
This wine was tasted between June 1 and June 16, 1996.
The Gonnet brothers continue to produce the most underrated wines of Chateauneuf du Pape. The Gonnets, whose vineyards are well-placed in the crau section of the appellation, not far from Vieux-Telegraphe, keep prices modest, rarely seek publicity, and year after year turn out savory, rich wines.
