Rocca di Montegrossi’s 2000 Vin Santo is one of the most exotic, personality-driven sweet wines being made in Italy today. Ricasoli dried his Malvasia for 5 months, then vinified the wine and aged it for six years in a succession of small barrels made from a variety of woods, including cherry and oak. The exclusive use of Malvasia gives this wine an exotic profile encompassing a veritable kaleidoscope of coconut, baking spices, leather, espresso, caramel and dried fruits. Despite its extreme concentration and weight, the wine offers outstanding balance and poise. It could very well overpower even the strongest cheeses and is probably best enjoyed on its own. This is the most full-bodied, exotic Vin Santo being made in Chianti Classico. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.
