The most opulent, sexy and mouth-filling of the three cuvees I was able to taste for this retrospective, the 2006 Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane gives up lots of dark currant and blackberry fruit, roasted herbs, pepper and scorched earth on the nose. These give way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, supple, forward and thoroughly enjoyable effort that has plenty of Gigondas charm, and another 4-5 years of longevity. The blend on this cuvée is 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and the balance Syrah, all of which spent 18 months in close to equal parts larger oak casks, two-year-old barrels and new barrels.
