For the third straight year in my blind tastings of the wines of Gigondas, Santa Duc's wines have ranked in one of the top three spots. A strong argument can be made that this estate is making the best wine of the appellation. Because of the superlative quality of the raw materials in 1990, two cuvees have been made. The 1990 regular cuvee is an opaque black/purple-colored wine with a wonderfully pure nose of black-raspberries and minerals. In the mouth, this full-bodied, super-concentrated wine is long, opulent, powerful, and impeccably well-balanced. Approachable now for its sheer intensity of sweet fruit, it will easily last for up to a decade. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC.
