The 2012 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is a wine with two opposite personalities. The first comes forward in the bouquet, which is floral and delicate. It shows rose hip, dried lavender and crème de cassis. The second side of the wine emerges in the deep power and momentum that drives the mouthfeel. The wine's 15% alcohol is forceful and strong. These two sides don't find balance, but they do define this wine.

Linear and tensile, stretching the cherry, strawberry and briar flavors tight across the dense, mouthcoating tannins. Comes together on the finish, with fine equilibrium and a fruit and mineral aftertaste. The 2011 Barolo Vigna Rocche dell'Annunziata does not live up to the high bar set by this wine in past vintages. There is a ripe or jammy note here that is distracting. It takes away from the sense of balance and elegant intensity that we anticipate finding in the greatest expressions of Nebbiolo. There are flavors of sweet blackberry preserves, followed by a touch of sour fruit on the close.
