The dark plum-colored 1998 Barolo Pernanno exhibits toasty new oak in the aromatics along with notions of caramel, black cherries, and vanillin. Loads of raisin and spice aromas, with hints of cloves and fresh herbs. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and an Amarone-like, dried fruit aftertaste. Rather rustic, but impressive. Slightly overdone.
