The 2009 Barolo Pernanno does a great job of magically transporting you within the vineyard. There are earthy and chalky notes here with hints of white truffle and forest berry. The intensity of the mineral shadings – ranging from crushed granite to lead pencil – is indeed the wine’s most beautiful quality. In the mouth, it shows medium density with a tightly woven fabric of silky tannins, soft fruit and bright acidity. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
A leather-faced grape farmer with the happily happenstance name of Giovanni Bongiovanni founded the estate in 1950 with the intention of selling fruit. Today, it is managed by Davide Mozzone, who has worked hard to be part of an elite group of boutique wineries worth keeping an eye on.
