The only red produced in the vintage, and a good one at that, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 70% Grenache and even parts Syrah and Mourvedre that was aged mostly in foudre. Loaded with character, it offers notions of saddle leather, wild herbs, charcuterie, pepper and sweet black currants to go with a medium-bodied, supple and beautifully fruited profile on the palate. There’s good tannin and depth here, so while already accessible, it should have upward of a decade of longevity. Drink now-2021.
One of my favorite estates and run by Yannick and Corinne Gasparri, Domaine la Cote de l’Ange produces textbook, classically styled efforts that are loaded with character. Their 2010s were spectacular, and these 2011s and 2012s aren’t far behind.
