Surprisingly, the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape showed beautifully and seemed like a completely different wine than what I tasted out of barrel last year (I rated it 82-85). Nicely concentrated, medium to full-bodied and structured, it offers lots of garrigue, saddle leather, dried pepper and assorted meaty dark fruits on the nose. A blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, it still has the firm, savory edge to its tannin that’s common in the vintage, yet in this case, there’s solid mid-palate depth and good concentration as well. This rock solid Chateauneuf du Pape will drink well through at least 2023.
