This domaine's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape—a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah, all aged in concrete tanks or tronconic vats—is pretty classically styled. Hints of garrigue accent ripe cherries on the nose in this full-bodied, supple effort. Yes, it's ripe, weighing in at a reported 16.2% alcohol, yet it doesn't come across as hot or heavy-handed, being easy to drink, with a long, concentrated and softly tannic finish.

Now that it's in bottle, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape has taken on darker fruit flavors, most notably notes of black olive, plum and cola. It's concentrated and richly textured, with the vintage's characteristic open-knit tannins in evidence on the mid-palate and asphalt-tinged finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Another fine effort in this very good vintage is Domaine de la C?te de l'Ange's 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape. A traditional blend of 70% Grenache, with the balance split between Syrah and Mourvèdre, it spent time in both wooden foudres and cuves béton (concrete vats). Ample spice combines with richly tannic, dark, plummy fruit in this handsome, full-bodied wine.

The estate produced a single cuvée in 2014 and their 2014 Chateauneuf du Pape is rock solid, with medium-bodied richness, a layered, balanced profile and Proven?al notes of garrigue, olives, saddle leather, and meaty red and black fruits. It shows the streamlined and more mid-weight style of the vintage, but I’d happily drink it over the coming 5-7 years
