One of my favorite producers appears to have underperformed with their 1999 Chianti Classico. Given their impeccable track record for high quality, I was surprised by the leanness and austerity found in this effort. Although the vintage was extremely ripe and jammy, this 1999 comes across as medium-bodied, attractively-scented (soy, minerals, earth, and cherry fruit), but attenuated and compressed in the mouth. It may have been going through an awkward stage when I tasted it, but I must write my review based on the way the wine tastes, not on a winery's track record or pedigree. Drink it over the next 6-7 years. Importer: Vias Imports, New York, NY; tel. (212) 629-0200
