Last year I reviewed the good to very good 1989 and 1990 Castellare proprietary red wines, I Sodi di San Niccolo (this Chianti estate's blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Black Malvoisie). I prefer this Chianti Classico Riserva to the proprietary wines. It exhibits a dark ruby/garnet color, a rich, intense nose of cedar, damp earth, leather, and jammy, black-cherry fruit. Medium to full-bodied and soft, it is a gorgeously rich, velvety-textured Chianti for drinking over the next 7-8 years.
