Similar in style to the 1986 and 1985, this dark ruby-colored wine reveals a passable, but tight nose of spice, wood, and fruit. Compressed and lean in the mouth, with an angular, compact personality, it exhibits medium body, higher than normal acidity, and pronounced tannin. Although it is a good wine, I have the same reservations about it as I do many B.V. Private Reserves from the mid-eighties on - is there enough depth and fruit to balance out the wine's other components, particularly the high acidity, much of it added? It is not revealing any signs of aging as the color is healthy, but just how much charm and pleasure will emerge remains debatable.
