Among the very last of the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignons to be released, Beaulieu has packaged the Reserve in a newly designed, heavy glass bottle sporting an attractive label that contrasts sharply with the simplistic Private Reserve labels of the past. While the wine is certainly good, no bells or whistles rang after two separate tastings. The color is a healthy dark ruby with noticeable lightening at the edge. The subtle, reserved nose offers pleasant aromas of oak and a whiff of weedy blackcurrants and spice. Medium-bodied, with fine richness and ripeness, as well as noticeable acidity and moderately high tannin, this is a spicy, well-made Cabernet Sauvignon, but at this price, consumers should receive more for their money. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2020.
