The 1989 Les Hauts de Montmirail is a spectacular wine for this appellation. My notes said, "essence of wine." Super rich, with a huge bouquet that soars from the glass, it offers up aromas of cassis, vanillin, smoke, minerals, and licorice. In the mouth it exhibits huge extraction of flavor, gobs of ripe tannins, and a sweet, expansive, superb finish. This is a Gigondas to buy by the case. Anticipated maturity: now-2007. Last tasted 8/96.
