This modern-styled Gigondas relies heavily on new oak, which tends to be relatively pronounced in the wine’s youth. The 2001 possesses less intensity than the 2000 exhibited. The medium-bodied, elegant, dark plum/ruby-colored 2001 reveals toasty vanillin/espresso characteristics along with kirsch and black currant notes. Lighter than usual, but very pretty, it should be consumed over the next 7-8 years.
